What does 'Architect' mean?
When dealing with construction contracts for clients we are often asked "What does Architect mean?" This is particularly relevant when the parties have already employed a consultant to act as contract administrator who is not an "Architect".
When a Joint Contracts Tribunal Contract (JCT) otherwise known as a construction contract, is to be adopted the Employer's representative can be an Architect but also a member of another profession. The Architects Act 1997 deals with what it is to be an Architect and to assist in such matters the Architects Registration Board (ARB) was established. Earlier this year The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and the ARB jointly drew up the Architects Registration Board framework document. This is a broad framework within which ARB and DCLG intend to operate. While it does not create a legally binding contract, convey any legal powers or responsibilities, have legal effect or consequences it is hoped it will regulate matters.
Copies of the document have been made available to the public on the ARB website, at: www.arb.org.uk/publications/rules_and_policies/Framework%20agreement.pdf
