How to be a “Gold Medal Employer” during the Olympic Games

As the country gears up for this summer’s Olympic Games in London, employers should be thinking about an Olympic policy to ensure they don’t end up finishing last!

Employment advisory service ACAS has published new guidance to help employers. Key points in the guidance to consider include;

How will you manage attendance?

Now is the time to start talking to your employees about their plans so that you can establish what is going to work best for your business. Perhaps implementing a 'first come, first served' policy for booking leave during the Olympics will help keep things simple, although you must also bear in mind that the Olympics take place during the summer school holidays so this will be a busy time for leave requests!. Whichever option you decide is best, now is the time to start drawing up some guidelines and making your employees aware of them.

Do you have a flexible working policy?

If you don’t already have flexible working in your business, it may be something to consider, even as a short-term measure. It may help boost morale and keep unauthorised absences to a minimum. If you are going to implement flexible working, even only on a short term basis we would recommend that you put a written policy in place so that all employees are aware of the rules.

How will you deal with performance issues?

You may be faced with employees watching lengthy coverage of the Games via their computers. To combat this, why not plan for popular sporting events in advance? You could allow employees to watch events during agreed times or perhaps considering screening key events in the office for employees to watch together.
