Derian House Children's Hospice

Derian House is a children's hospice in Chorley, Lancashire. It was established in 1993 by the parents of a terminally ill child at a time when there was little or no local support for families in their situation.

The hospice provides specialist palliative respite and terminal care for children who might not live to adulthood. They offer a range of services to children, teenagers and their families including:

  • Hospice at Home - a day care service where care is provided at the child's home.
  • Bereavement support groups for all the family, siblings, parents and grandparents.
  • Therapeutic activities provided by a play specialist and developed into age related play.
  • Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy including Jacuzzi sessions and aromatherapy treatments.
  • Massage and relaxation techniques, pet therapy and music therapy to encourage interaction.
  • Day trips and holidays for children and teenagers to allow them to "feel normal" for a while

The hospice currently supports more than 250 families who have a child with a terminal or life threatening illness and a further 200 families receiving bereavement support. It maintains this vital support without statutory funding and is solely reliant on voluntary contributions to continue the life changing work it carries out.
